Japan selects new next-gen geothermal study projects

On October 24, 2025, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) released the results of its public call for feasibility studies on next-generation geothermal technologies. The application period ran from 10 February to 28 February 2025, with six proposals selected.

The selected organisations are:

  • Engineering Advancement Association of Japan (ENAA)
  • CRIEPI, JAPEX, Geothermal Engineering Co. and Kajima Corporation
  • GeoDreams Co., Ltd. and G-Pulse Co., Ltd.
  • Akita University
  • Chubu Electric Power Co. and Kajima Corporation
  • Mitsui Energy Development Co., Ltd.

The studies cover deeper resource use, enhanced reservoir imaging, advanced drilling and related next-generation geothermal technologies.

Additional project selected under mid-2025 call

JOGMEC also confirmed the result of a separate tender held 23 June to 24 July 2025, selecting Toyo Engineering Corporation for an additional feasibility study. The award was published on 24 October 2025.

Announcements from GeoDreams and G-Pulse

GeoDreams Co., Ltd. published a statement confirming its selection for feasibility work under the programme, highlighting studies focused on advanced subsurface imaging. G-Pulse Co., Ltd., is working jointly with GeoDreams.

Study themes and participating institutions

According to the tender documents, the selected projects will evaluate:

  • Deep-resource and high-temperature potential
  • New drilling and wellbore concepts
  • High-resolution subsurface evaluation
  • Reservoir stimulation and heat-extraction methods
  • Technology integration with broader energy systems

Participants include engineering associations, research institutes, universities, utilities and private geothermal developers, reflecting Japan’s technology-focused approach to geothermal development.

An additional public call has been issued on Nov. 10, 2025 “FY2025 Geothermal Power Resource Survey Subsidy Program 4th Call for Applications“.
