PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (BREN), through subsidiary Star Energy Geothermal, has announced capacity expansion work at the Wayang Windu Units 1 and 2 geothermal power facility located in West Java, Indonesia.
A retrofit of Wayang Windu Units 1 and 2 had already been announced as part of BREN’s capacity expansion plans for its brownfield geothermal sites, with a target of 18.4 MW of additional capacity. The upgrades made to the power plants were quite comprehensive, comprising the following:
- Unit 1 – replacement of steam turbine rotor, diaphragm, and related auxiliary equipment; replacement of complete set of cooling tower including fiberglass reinforced polymer structure and equipment; and replacement of hot water pump impeller, motor, and accessories
- Unit 2 – replacement of steam turbine rotor, diaphragm, and related auxiliary equipment; replacement of cooling tower internal equipment and componentsl and replacement of hot water pump impeller, motor, and accessories.
Since 2025, BREN had also completed a retrofit of Units 4, 5, and 6 of the Salak geothermal power plant, and put online the 15.5-MW Salak binary geothermal power plant. In total, these four projects have contributed to 40 MW of additional power generation capacity of BREN’s operational geothermal assets.
The total installed capacity of the geothermal power plant of BREN has now grown to 926 MW, a significant increase from 886 MW, or the installed capacity of the company when it became publicly listed in 2023.
BREN also has a very active pipeline of retrofit projects under development. These include 40 MW from Salak Unit 7, 30 MW from Wayang Windu Unit 3, and 7 MW from Darajat Unit 3. These are all targeted for completion by the end of 2026. When all these capacity expansion projects are completed, the total installed capacity for geothermal power generation will reach 1 GW.
“We are in an excellent position to achieve our target of 1 GW of installed geothermal capacity. This is a crucial milestone for us in delivering new, renewable energy,” stated BREN President Director Hendra Soetjipto Tan in an information disclosure.
