Despite enormous geothermal potential, particular in the West of the country, Canada has so far not joined the ranks of countries with geothermal power generation.
Despite a challenging environment and lack of political support, Canadian developer Borealis GeoPower has plans to bring Canada’s first geothermal power plant online by 2018.
The company is developing a 15 MW geothermal power plant at Canoe Reach, near Valeount in the South East of province of British Columbia, Canada. The company plans to start selling power to the utility of BC Hydro in 2018.
Borealis GeoPower is also developing another 15 MW geothermal power project at Lakelse Lake, near Terrace, BC, this in partnership with LL Geothermal.
In a statement with the Vancouver Sun, Craig Dunn of Borealis says that Borealis expects to be both projects to be profitable operations and not pilot plants. They also believe that there could be five to 10 more sites in the province that would be suitable for some speedy geothermal development.
“The resource opportunity in British Columbia is amazing,” Dunn says.
