Building permit granted for geothermal plant in Kirchweidach, Germany

Geothermal developer FG Geothermie has been granted a building permit for the planned geothermal power plant at Kirchweidach. Currently a geothermal heating plant is providing heating to large-scale greenhouse operations in the municipality.

The permit was granted in a meeting of the municipality council. Concrete construction plans etc are though still going through a permitting process on the state level.

Drilling for the project started in 2010 and in 2012 it was announced that a geothermal power plant was to be built by a German-French consortium. In the mean time, an approach of smaller-scale power generation was planned. There have been several challenges faced by the project, last but not least due to a different perspective of the local council and the private sector developer.

Currently, it is not clear what size of plant the developer is planning.
