Call for abstracts – Mine water energy symposium; 29-30 April 2026; Newcastle, UK

Abstracts are now being accepted for the upcoming Mine Water Energy Symposium, to be held on 29-30 April 2026 at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Newcastle, UK. There will also be an option to join and present online.

The call for abstracts is open only until 20 February 2026, 4PM UK (BST). Please submit your abstracts to MineWaterThermal_IEA@bgs.ac.uk. Initial expressions of interest are also welcome before the deadline, especially from international presenters who can share their experience in mine water geothermal from around the world.

The event is co-organised by the British Geological Survey, the Mining Remediation Authority, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and IEA Geothermal.

The event organizers are welcoming oral presentations (10-12 minutes in length) covering all aspects of mine water geothermal energy, with a focus on mine water heating, cooling and storageschemes worldwide, including:

• Case studies of mine water heating, cooling and thermal storage

• New schemes.

• Progress updates – feasibility, investigation and operational.

• Regulation and policy.

• Solutions to the challenges of mine water geothermal scheme

• Research and innovation (e.g. hydrogeological and heat flow modelling, geochemistry, etc.).

• New techniques and products.

Proposals for nano-presentations (5 minutes in length) and posters are also welcome.

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts, where the event will be held, is notably one of the buildings heated by the Gateshead district heating scheme, which has a mine water heating component.
