Call for papers – 11th African Rift Geothermal Conference; October 2026; Moroni, Comoros

Abstracts are now being accepted for the 11th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo C11), taking place on 19 – 24 October 2026 at the Palais du Peuple in Moroni, Comoros.

The African Rift Geothermal Conference is the continent’s premier platform for advancing geothermal development through research, innovation, policy, and investment. It brings together key stakeholders to accelerate geothermal energy as a driver of Africa’s sustainable growth.

The event is hosted by the Government of the Union of the Comoros through the Ministry of Energy, Water and Hydrocarbons and the Geological Bureau of Comoros (BGC). It is organized in collaboration with the African Geothermal Association (AGA), the African Union Commission (AUC), the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA), and key international partners active in geothermal energy development across Africa.

Geothermal development in Comoros

This year’s ARGeo is being hosted in the Union of the Comoros, reaffirming its commitment to contributing to the green energy transition of the African continent. The Comoros Islands are making some strides in geothermal energy development with a program that aims to harness up to 45 MW of potential over an area of 4.1 square kilometers, identified during geoscientific studies done in 2015. The project is part of the country’s national strategy for sustainable energy, focusing on clean and renewable electricity production.

Technical advancements, including a geophysical campaign, have confirmed the geothermal potential in the planned project area. The project is expected to unlock new investment for the Mount Karthala Geothermal Project, which has been in development since 2018. This could become the first geothermal power plant in the Comoros, potentially making it the third African nation with an operational geothermal power plant.
