EDC prepares USD 1.68 billion investment plan for upgrade of Leyte geothermal complex, Philippines

EDC is planning to invest about Php 100 billion to expand the capacity of the Leyte geothermal power plant complex in the Philippines.
The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has indicated plans of investing up to PhP 100.88 billion (approx. USD 1.68 billion) to expand the installed capacity of the Leyte geothermal power complex in the Philippines.
According to documents filed by the company to government agencies, the upgrade aims to increase the total installed capacity of the Tongonan Geothermal Project from the current 637.21 MW to 967.22 MW.
Another part of the plan is the construction of the 450-MW New Upper Mahiao Power Plant (NUMPP). This will presumably replace the current 123-MW facility that is due for decommissioning by 2029, as previously reported by ThinkGeoEnergy.
Construction of the NUMPP will take place over 2026 to 2028. Phased commercial operations is expected to begin by 2027, allowing the old Upper Mahiao facility to remain operation until the new power plant has been fully commissioned.
To provide the steam supply for the expanded power facilities, EDC is also planning to construct 27 new well pads and drill about 172 wells. EDC will also be constructing a new 20-MW battery energy storage system.
On the exploration front, the company aims to start exploration drilling at the nearby Alto Peak site by 2027. If results prove favorable, well drilled in Alto Peak can be integrated into existing systems.
EDC had along announced plans for the upgrade of its Leyte geothermal power generation facilities, but these new government filings provide more details on the actual growth strategy.
