Geothermal drilling in Kalisz, Poland to start May 2026 following contract signing

The contract for the drilling of a geothermal research and appraisal well in the city of Kalisz in Poland has been signed with UOS Drilling following a tender process. The start of drilling is now expected by May 2026.

The investment cost for the project is PLN 22 million, but the city will be receiving funding of PLN 12 million from the National Environmental Protection Fund. The funding was awarded to Kalisz, along with six other municipalities, back in 2024.

The planned exploratory well will be drilled to a depth of 1700 meters, targeting a Lower Jurassic layer that is expected to host thermal waters at 40 to 50 °C. Subsurface thermal maps have indicated that temperatures at the site reach almost 100 °C at 2000 meters, 120 °C at 3000 meters, and 155 °C at 4000 meters.

The completion of the entire suite of hydrological, geophysical, and laboratory work as part of the geothermal drilling project is scheduled for August 2027.

Mayor Krystian Kinastowski explained that if a viable geothermal resource is found, it will be used to supply heat to housing estates, single-family homes, and urban facilities, as well as the nearby Kalisz Aquapark and sports facilities. It will also make it possible to expand the network of thermal pools in the city, as was done in Uniejow. However, the applications for the thermal water can only be determined once the parameters of the resource have been tested and measured.
