Drilling of a geothermal exploration well has started in Legnickie Pole, Poland as the commune aims for thermal recreation development.

Drilling operations have officially started for a geothermal exploration well in the commune of Legnickie Pole in the  Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. The well is being drilled to a target depth of 2000 meters by local drilling company ALGEO.

If the well confirms the presence of a viable geothermal resource, the commune is considering the use of it for heating buildings and developing recreational infrastructure such as thermal pools and spa facilities. During the kick-off ceremony, Legnickie Pole Mayor Rafal Plezia expressed hope that the geothermal well can transform the character of the commune to a thermal spa location, or for Legnickie Pole to be otherwise known as “Legnickie Pole Zdrój.”

The commune received funding of over PLN 16 million (approx. USD 4.3 million) from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW) to support the geothermal exploration drilling project. The official signing of the funding agreement took place in 2024.

Elsewhere in the Lower Silesia region, geothermal drilling is also expected to start this year in the city of Jelenia Gora following a funding announcement in late 2024. Exploration drilling had already been done in Gluszyca two years ago,  but the flowrate of the well was deemed too low for municipal heating use.
