Reported by ScienceInsider, an Italian research project that plans to drill into the heart of a “supervolcano” in the south of Italy has received approval by authorities.
The approval came from the mayor of the city of Naples and is for a 500 meter deep pilot well.
The project called “Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project” has been set up by an international consortium of scientists. The project is located at the Campi Flegrei caldera, a few kilometres to the west of Naples. The project was initially put forward in 2009 to drill a 4km deep well, but expected risks put the project on hold.
