Pertamina preparing infrastructure for Lumut Balai 3 geothermal drilling programme in Indonesia

Construction of the well pad and access roads is ongoing for the drilling of geothermal wells for Lumut Balai Unit 3, with drilling to start by Q2 2026.
Construction crew and equipment have already been mobilized to prepare the well pad and access roads for the drilling programme of the planned 55-MW Lumut Balai Unit 3 geothermal power plant of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Drilling is scheduled to commence by the second quarter of 2026.
The Lumut Balai Unit 3 geothermal power plant has a target commercial operations date (COD) by 2030. This development follows up shortly after the successful start of operations of the 55-MW Lumut Balai Unit 2 geothermal power plant in July 2025.
Just about 2 months ago, PGEO held a kick-off meeting to officially start the execution phase of Lumut Balai Unit 3. The development of Lumut Balai Unit 3 is part of the company’s long-term strategy for geothermal capacity growth. It has also been included in the 2025-2029 Blue Book of the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN / Bappenas), along with three other PGEO geothermal projects. According to the listing, Lumut Balai Unit 3 will require an estimated capital of USD 305 million.
Capacity expansion and co-generation at brownfield sites remains a viable growth opportunity for PGEO, with similar ventures being planned for the operating fields of Lahendong and Ulubelu. These are expected to create up to 215 MW of new capacity from 2029 to 2032.
