In July, it was reported that the Caldwell Ranch Exploration Project of Calpine Corp. at the Geysers has been able to confirm an initial 11.4 MW potential of power generation capacity at three previously abandoned wells.
The project has received funding of $5 million through the U.S. Department of Energy, as part of larger efforts to search for additional geothermal resources in the U.S.
The technology used could help utilize abandoned wells in other geothermal areas as well, such as Cos, Salton Sea and Medicine Lake in California.
