PT Supreme Energy Rantau Dedap, a joint venture geothermal project by Japanese company Marubeni (35%), Supreme Energy from Indonesia (30%) and Engie from France (formerly GDF Suez, 35%) is supporting local women coffee growers near its project at Rantau Dedap, South Sumatra.
The Rantau Dedap geothermal power project is expected to generate more than 90 MW of electricity, which will power up to 130,000 homes and avoid over 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year by 2021.
The power project also supports livelihood improvement of local communities in the project area, especially for women. Tunggul Bute’s Family Welfare Organization is one of the recipients of these efforts. Women are provided with training and access to technology expanding their coffee production and increasing their incomes.
The company assists the coffee growers on growing, roasting, and finding global buyers for their beans.
The developer is backed by the Asian Development (ADB).
The company has started linking the growers with buyers, including PT Fortunium, Rumah Kopi Ranin, and Indokom, which supply both the domestic and overseas markets, as reported by the company and officials of ADB.
Similar efforts are also reported from e.g. El Salvador in Central America.
