Workshop, virtual – Geophysics in Geothermal, Oct. 12-14, 2021

The workshop features formal presentations by experts sharing their experiences and lessons learned from geophysics and directly related geoscience applied to geothermal resource exploration, development, and production monitoring. The workshop provides a forum to discuss current best practice – in data acquisition, processing, and integrated modeling technologies – and to highlight future requirements for both conventional high enthalpy projects and the increasingly viable lower temperature ones. We encourage informative and innovative submissions addressing the following themes:

Current practices in geophysics for geothermal resource exploration and monitoring

• Historical overviews of the principal geophysics data acquisition, processing, modeling and interpretation practices employed in geothermal up to now, highlighting both where and why they were successful, pitfalls and lessons learned along the way, for methods including Magnetotellurics (MT), ground and airborne EM, gravity and magnetics, passive (MEQ arrays) and active seismic, and borehole geophysics.

Latest technical developments – what’s promising (and what’s not)

• Recent technology and interpretation workflow developments, including integration of the geophysics with the available geoscience and reservoir engineering models, offering significant advantages to answer key issues:
• • • Exploration phase – de-risking pre-drill resource concept models
    • Development phase – reliable updating of resource models to optimize production and injection well locations and completions
    • Production Monitoring phase – what time-lapse geophysics techniques provide reliable update constraints to reservoir engineers; e.g. drawdown, fluid saturation, cold recharge

• Emerging technologies to achieve cost-effective, reliable resource imaging
  • Data science and data-driven processes, including: Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, etc.
  • Petrophysics modeling integrated in geothermal resource characterization
  • Data and model uncertainty analysis, value of information
  • Data acquisition systems and methodologies

• Geophysics for the wider geothermal context
  • Characterizing low and medium temperature resources
  • Understanding the crustal scale processes driving geothermal systems
  • The physical properties of geothermal systems – updates on what is detectable
  • Active seismic – a greater role in higher and lower temperature resource assessment?
  • Satellite imagery – which techniques are most useful?
  • What geophysics practices in the O&G sphere should be adopted for geothermal
